Evolution of Electronics

Users of electronic devices are constantly seeking improvements, making it difficult on product designers and engineers to deliver.  The demands to make devices more compact, lightweight, and always connected are forcing feature tradeoffs.  That does not have to be the case when selecting a reflective display + FLEx front lighting.

Reflective Display Benefits

Traditional LCD screens light up with LEDs behind the display.  These lights are the main reason your devices run out of battery.  To combat this, display manufacturers have developed a reflective LCD which uses the light around us.  By removing the backlight, these reflective displays have 80x the power savings and they can deliver crystal clear images even in the brightest of sunlight.

However, with the light from the LCD removed, there is no way to see the display in a dim room.  This is why FLEx’s front light was created.  Our optical film delivers light to the front of the display when needed, cutting down power drain and reducing the need for all that battery.

LCDs have been the predominant display technology for electronics in the past few decades due to their low cost, high resolution, and video refresh.  In order to be visible to a user however, an energy-hungry backlight must be used to provide light to the LCD.  Even with the advent of high resolution OLED displays, they must be constantly drawing power for the display to be visible, have a short lifetime, and are costly.  The more practical solution for battery-operated devices is to front light reflective LCDs to deliver engaging graphics with ultra-low power.

Normally black, these displays only turn ON when drawing power. They are also difficult to read in bright sunlight and have an extremely short lifetime, making it difficult for use in extended lifetime devices.

LCDs are made up of tiny shutters that let light pass through the pixels. Traditionally this lighting comes in the form of backlighting using a line of LEDs along the edges of a plastic panel. This system is rigid, requires many LEDs, and requires a thicker frame to cover the hot spots along the border.

FLEx’s thin optical film can be placed on top of reflective LCDs, providing on-demand lighting while using only a fraction of the number of LEDs. Front lighting is ideal for low power, thin, and sunlight readable devices. FLEx’s light panel can also provide flexible lighting for flexible displays.
